Hi, I'm Jan König 👋. I'm one of the founders of Jovo, 28 years old, and live in Berlin. < Go back to learn more.

What's an expert?

I'm not an expert. Also, I feel like there's no real definition of what being an expert means (although Wikipedia tries). And most people who claim to be experts in a certain field probably don't have 10,000 hours of experience as Malcolm Gladwell suggests.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this applies: Being an expert and being perceived as an expert is mostly the same thing.

How to be perceived as an expert? Write everything down. Without output, there's no evidence to the public that you know a thing or two about your topic. I'm currently trying to pitch at as many events as possible, and offer press statements whenever appropriate (e.g. on the new Quartz news app here). It's very small steps, but maybe they'll lead to an invitation to a small conference, then a bigger one ... and then some day you might be perceived as an expert. Even better: You'll have learned so much by writing everything down and by talking to people and reflecting, that probably you'll be a "real" expert by then.
